Coincidence Maybe
The Fall of October

The Fall of October was an album that came to be out of necessity.  We had developed a new style and a new direction, and had a new line up in the band to meet those goals, but we didn't have anything recorded to show for it.  So we scheduled ourselves to record the album over the fall and we worked intensely on finishing a full album in less than a season.  Sure enough, we had the first pressed copies back in our hands by that January and it has been the best selling album of the band since it's release.

Some Fall of October fun facts:

  • Denver's drum tracks on "Bending Mirrors" took over seven and half hours to record. (Largely due to Travis' error on Punch Ins/outs while multitracking! Sorry man.)
  • The song/instrumental "Coming Down the Hill" is an arrangement that was inspired by Peter Gabriel's "Salisbury Hill" that the band covers in many of their concerts
  • Travis' guitar solo on "Fall of October" had to be completely rewritten during it's recording due to a technical problem that kept him from being able to duplicate his live version onto the recording.  As a result, it took from 10pm to almost 6am the next morning...talk about blisters.
  • The "guitar wreath" of strings pictured below was just the guitar strings that Travis went through during the recording sessions for this album.
  • The album was recorded in the garage of the house where the band collectively lived.  A mere $180 was spent on the sound-proofing which consisted largely of egg crate mattress pads found at K-mart.
  • The violin parts and female background vocals were recorded in one session by a then 15 year old named Kara Markley.  Her father, Craig recorded the accordian and whistles.  They're better know as members of the Celtic group Lone Raven
  • This was the band's first fully digital recording.
