Coincidence Maybe

Unexpected is the solo album I(Travis) recorded during C?M's hiatus.  Engineer Dustin Yoder and I moved to Florida and we recorded this during our stay there.  The fact that this was our fourth collaboration, coupled with improved digital recording technology and better outboard gear made this the highest quality project we had worked on.  I had many personal songs and themes that were more introspective than what I would usually put on a band-made album, so those parts and pieces along with new songs written during the sessions became the album that you can hear now.

Some Unexpected fun facts:

  • We built 4x8 sound proofing walls out of carpet padding torn out of a Disney hotel
  • Those 4x8 walls were used in the buildig of two different studios we built in two separate houses we lived in during the duration of the recording.
  • We encountered 3 hurricanes over the summer of recording in the second house.  Though there was plenty of damage outside, the house and studio suffered little more than a tiny leak in the roof.
  • I was married shortly after recording had wrapped up and the track "It's Better" was used for the sountrack to our first dance and was the first time my wife had heard the finished version of the song.
  • Over 40 sets of guitar strings were used over the 2 year recording time.  That's a lot for one guy!
  • There were five songs that didn't make the cut for the album, including one that had a choir singing latin.
  • It changes from time to time, but my overall favorites are "Feast or Famine", "The Truth is", and "Pacify Me".  All three were very different and I loved the way they turned out.
  • The bulk of the drumming on the album was done through sampling and programming.  I'm not a good enough drummer to be studio-worthy, so I went that route instead and just pretended.

Post-Recording Thoughts...

Unexpected's arrival. Just before Christmas the album arrived in it's final form. These are my thoughts as they have settled on me since that time. This album is not the album I had in mind. I'm not exactly sure when it began it's turn, but I know it happened after I moved to Florida. Until that point, the first song that was recorded timed out at 9 minutes plus. This was not unusual for songs that I wrote and arranged. I leaned towards feeling like songs that were short enough to be on the radio should …

"Wait for this Tide" Song Journal

Journal – Wait for this tide This was one of the first songs that I wrote after I moved to Florida. I would have to say that moving here ushered in a new chapter in my life, and I’ve noticed that difference showing through in some of the writings that I’ve done in preparation for this album. I certainly have felt that many aspects of my life were being put into a “holding pattern”. Out of the frustrations of being somewhere and not knowing why, and then feeling as though I …

"So Many Days" Song Journal

Journal – So Many Days So many, many days have passed since the writing of this song. It became the epitome of my dating relationships. There have been many times when I’ve played this song to console myself, and there have been almost as many times that I’ve played it to laugh. There always will be so many times that God protects me from the things I think I want so badly, just to find out that they very easily could’ve caused my demise… So many days… the song was …

"Pacify Me" Song Journal

Pacify Me: Recently, my brother Trent and I, along with Josh Mund, were rehearsing songs in the expectation of reuniting COINCIDENCE MAYBE for a new album, tour, and possible future. One of the songs that came from that time was “Pacify Me”. Trent had the music for the song just about finished on piano, and Josh and I filled it out and I started writing the lyrics for it. “I Failed” was written around this same time and the common thread between the two is the feeling that I …

"Feast or Famine" Song Journal

Feast or Famine: Some of the songs on this album have gone straight from my head onto disk. Others, like this one, took twists and turns and circles before becoming a finished song. For the most part, the body of the song and the lyrics have remained consistent, but the feel and the arrangement have undergone some changes. So many that there was a time that an entire new song was written out of just the ending section. After it was all said and done, I would say that there is probably going to be quite a …

Mid-process thoughts

At first, this album seemed like it would be quickly made, but due to relocating and then moving again, this is taking a bit longer than I had hoped. However, instead of being frustrated that the album wasn't coming to pass sooner, it seemed that the extra time only broadened the scope of what the album would end up being. As a songwriter, I have come to terms with the fact that I'm a poor storyteller. I make a pretty decent mirror though. I can usually put my life into song, and on occasion I can put …
